The Federico Olóriz Institute of Neurosciences at the University of Granada is a center dedicated to excellence in neuroscience and related fields. It was established by the Official Gazette of Granada on December 30, 1955 (Official State Gazette No. 34, p. 81, February 3, 1956), making it the oldest research institute at the University of Granada and the second oldest in Spain.
The Institute of Neurosciences incorporates scientific staff motivated by the study of the brain and nervous system, their functions and pathologies, using classic procedures and innovative methodologies. The Institute's members constitute a multidisciplinary group of researchers, including professors from various faculties and departments at the University of Granada.
The works published by the Institute of Neurosciences cover a wide range of neuroscientific topics, including areas such as molecular biology, epigenetics, neuroanatomy, neurohistology, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, neuroimaging, and behavioral neuroscience, among others. Pathologies such as neurodegeneration and mental disorders, among others, are also addressed. Due to its high productivity and scientific diversity, the Granada Institute of Neurosciences is currently a national and international center of reference in the study of neurosciences and offers an ideal training and professional development environment for future scientists.
In addition to its research work, the Institute of Neurosciences aims to share its findings with both the scientific community and society at large. An example of this is the Instituto de Neurociencias Conference, a biannual event organized in collaboration with the Granada Science Park and a monthly Science Club, as well as its presence on various social media platforms.
The Institute of Neurosciences annually awards prizes to young researchers in neuroscience and participates in the training of graduate students in the Master's Degree in Basic, Applied Neurosciences and Pain, which it coordinates.
